Collaborative Visualization using High-Resolution Tiled Displays

چکیده
We envision situation-rooms and research laboratories in which all the walls are made from seamless ultra-highresolution displays fed by data streamed over ultra-highspeed networks from distantly located visualization, storage servers, and high definition video cameras [1,6]. It will allow local and distributed groups of researchers to work together on large amounts of distributed heterogeneous datasets. From working with our collaborators at the US Geological Survey and the National Center for Microscopy and Imaging Research, we have seen how high resolution displays can be used to show detail and context simultaneously. Homeland security applications and emergency response management in particular, and the whole domain of visual analytics in general would largely benefit from the same features. We are taking the next steps toward this vision by building and using LambdaVision an 11x5 tiled display with a total resolution of 100 megapixels and developing SAGE, the Scalable Adaptive Graphics Environment. The goal is to enable scientists to explore datasets and share applications at the highest resolution available. SAGE allows the seamless display of various networked applications over the high-resolution displays. Each visualization application (such as 3D rendering, remote desktop, video streams, very large 2D maps, see Figure 1) streams its rendered pixels (or graphics primitives) to SAGE, allowing for any given layout onto the displays (e.g. the output of arbitrary M by N pixel rendering cluster nodes can be streamed to X by Y pixel display screens).

High-Performance Scalable Graphics Architecture for High-Resolution Displays
We present the Scalable Adaptive Graphics Environment (SAGE), a graphics streaming architecture for supporting collaborative scientific visualization environments with potentially hundreds of megapixels of contiguous display resolution. In collaborative scientific visualization it is crucial to share high resolution visualizations as well as high definition video among groups of collaborators a...
متن کاملEnabling high resolution collaborative visualization in display rich virtual organizations
We predict that high-resolution displays will penetrate scientific laboratories first, and will become pervasive at the office, in the cubicle, and meeting room, and ultimately at home. In this paper, we present a novel approach to distribute high-resolution images tomultiple tiled displays in real-time using a high-performance PC cluster. This approach allows users to share their visualization...
متن کاملDynamic Level of Detail for Tiled Large High-Resolution Displays
Large high-resolution displays (LHRDs) combine high pixel density with a large display surface area. Level-of-Detail (LOD) methods can be used to accelerate viewdependent rendering of large data sets on such display systems. We present a new method for dynamic, view-dependent level-of-detail rendering for tiled display walls. Based on the user’s tracked head position and orientation, we determi...

Projection technology has made large tiled displays an exciting feature of advanced visualization systems. However, one challenge to using such systems effectively is the development of input technologies that comfortably allow collaborative interaction with the displayed data on these large surfaces. We have developed an input system that allows any number of users to interact simultaneously w...

Tiled displays systems built by combining the images from arrays of projectors can provide a huge number of pixel elements to applications needing to visually represent a large amount of information, including a range of scientific visualization applications and high-fidelity collaborative environments. With commodity projectors and COTS rendering clusters, these large-area displays have the po...
